Main chahta bhi yahi tha...

Main chahta bhi yahi tha vo bewafa nikle
use samajhne ka koi to silsila nikle..

Kitaab-e-*maazi ke *auraak ulat ke dekh zara
na jaane kaun sa safha muda hua nikle..

Jo dekhne main bahut hi kareeb lagta hai
usi ke baare main socho to faasla nikle...
[Wasim Barelvi]

This was sung by Jagjit Singh (with slight changes ;) ) ...
*maazi=past, *auraak=pages

Hi friend, I love this ghazal but for years have been longing for a translation. Can you please translate it to English and post here? It would mean a lot to me! Many thanks....

Hi Ajnabhi,

The following is what I understand of the ghazal. Pardon me if there's any inaccuracy.

The author wants to sound a tad bit ironic, he actually is so terribly in love with her that he wants his lover to realize that he actually wanted that she left him for he could understand her better after they parted.

In the second couplet he says, try looking at the your life in hindsight, you will find a lot of events worth remembering. Doesn't it happen that there are many events in life which go unnoticed, for which the importance is not realised then but when we think about them afterwards.

The third couplet is also pretty straightforward. It's actually a very common thing which happens to us atleast to me it does :). The moment we start thinking about people we reckon are very close to us, understand us and then about what they think about us, we realize that they not know about us quite as much we thought they did.

Hope it helped.
PS: Do I know you?

It means in the first verse that he wished that the protagonist had been a betrayer at least then he would understand the behaviour. This could be a friend/girlfriend/wife/whomever. In the second he says that look at a book you have read in the past again, who knows which pages will open up or are are marked, meaning look at your past and you will see what is important that you didn't realise. In the third he says look carefully at all who surround you, those who seem the closest may not indeed be.
